Vitamin A

Vitamin A (Vit A) is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is an umbrella term for multiple molecules with biological activity linked to retinol. Preformed vitamin A retinol (all-trans-retinol), retinal, retinoic acid, and retinol esters such as retinol‑palmitate and retinol-acetate originate from animal-derived food. Provitamin A alpha- and beta-cryptoxanthin can be converted to retinol and originate from plant-derived foods (EFSA NDA. 2015b).

Dietary intake recommendations generally focus on retinol equivalents (RE), which describes the vitamin A activity of a substance (EFSA NDA. 2015b).
