17 beta-estradiol

17 beta-estradiol is the most potent estrogen in circulation and an isomer of estradiol, a form of estrogen. Like all estradiols, 17 beta-estradiol is a lipophilic steroid hormone synthesised in the ovaries and adrenal glands using cholesterol as a precursor. It is associated with female reproductive functions and also seems to be involved in the multihormonal regulation of the prolactin gene transcription. Prolactin gene transcription apparently increases if 17 beta-estradiol is present (Maurer, 1982Petrone et al., 2014).
