Deficiency, iron

Iron deficiency is a condition in which the body's iron stores are depleted. This state can lead to functional deficits affecting cognitive development, immune system and concentration. High risk groups include children and adults with increased demand or insufficient access to iron-rich foods, especially pregnant women (Abbaspour et al., 2014). Iron deficiency is often caused by insufficient iron intake from the diet and increased through the naturally low bioavailability of iron from a plant-based diet, especially for vegetarians and vegans (Anderson & Frazer, 2017).
