This term is a neologism merging the terms "nutrient" and "pharmaceutical" into one word. The new term nutraceutical is used to describe food components in concentrated and pharmaceutical form that provide health benefits and can be used to prevent or treat diseases (Santini & Novellino, 2018, Santini et al., 2018). A consensus on the definition is pending (status 2021). The Institute NaturScience defines the term nutraceutical, using other works as base, as a compound or mixture of compounds contained within food or food supplements intended to exert a therapeutic effect that is neither nutritious nor a pharmaceutical (Frank et al., 2020, Aronson, 2017).
