DHA, C22:6 n3 is an omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA). It has “a structural role in the nervous tissue and the retina” and is involved in cognitive function and visual development” (EFSA NDA. 2014). In breast milk, DHA is affected by maternal intake in contrast to its counterpart arachidonic acid which stems from maternal stores (Hadley et al. 2016; Koletzko and Innis. 2005). Since February 2020, DHA is a mandatory component in European infant formulae (EU/2016/127).
