Anaemia, megaloblastic

This form of anaemia results from folate and/or vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency. These vitamins are essential for DNA synthesis. Impaired DNA synthesis is reflected in immature enlarged red blood cells (McNulty et al., 2019).

Without supplementation, megaloblastic anaemia occurs in about 25% of pregnancies in Asia, Africa, and South America and in about 5% of well-nourished populations (McNulty et al., 2019)
