Inflammatory bowel disease

IBD is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder of unknown aetiology. IBD encompasses colitis ulcerosa and Crohn's disease (Morbus Crohn) and is "characterised by chronic relapsing of inflammation and immune activation" often paralleled by changes in colonic microbiota species and psychology. The presentation overlaps with irritable bowel syndrome and it has been proposed that both may be signs of the same disease on different ends of a spectrum (Abdul Rani et al., 2016).
