Irritable bowel syndrome

IBS is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. It involves the gut-brain axis yet its aetiology or mechanisms are unknown despite this being a common disorder. It can develop after enteral infection and result in constant activation of the immune system. Thus, IBS shares many symptoms with inflammatory bowel disease and therefore it has been suggested that IBS and IBD are the same disease on two sides of a spectrum (Abdul Rani et al., 2016).
