Anaemia, iron deficiency

Iron deficiency; "Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells (and consequently their oxygen-carrying capacity) is insufficient to meet the body's physiologic needs" (WHO 2011). Not only does the number of red blood cells decrease but also their shape and size can be affected by anaemia, which hampers their ability to transport oxygen (WHO 2016). Iron deficiency anaemia is often caused by a preceding iron deficiency and is reliably diagnosed by decreased haemoglobin concentrations (WHO 2016; Anderson and Frazer 2017).
